This week in 1976, Ben Gibbard was born in Bremerton, Washington. He went to college intending to be an engineer, but while at Western Washington University, he formed Death Cab for Cutie with three fellow students in 1997. The group took its name from a song performed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band in the Beatles‘ film Magical Mystery Tour.
This week in 1971, sax player King Curtis was murdered outside his apartment in New York City. Although he scored a few hit singles under his own name (most notably an amazing version of Led Zeppelin‘s Whole Lotta Love), he was best known as a sideman for others, especially soul artists including Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett.
